The 90/180 Rule
Your allowed stay is counted across the whole Schengen Area, not per country — so you can't get 90 days in France and another 90 in Italy on the same clock. A single France visa lets you travel freely across all 29 Schengen countries within that limit.
Multiple-Entry Visas
