Spanish Escapes: Four Cities, One Unforgettable Rail Route

Madrid, Spain's central capital, is a city of elegant boulevards and expansive, manicured parks such as the Buen Retiro. It's renowned for its rich repositories of European art, including the Prado Museum's works by Goya, Velázquez and other Spanish masters. The heart of old Hapsburg Madrid is the portico-lined Plaza Mayor, and nearby is the baroque Royal Palace and Armory, displaying historic weaponry.

From Madrid, the train carries you south to Málaga, a port city on the Costa del Sol known for its high-rise hotels and resorts above yellow-sand beaches, from where you can choose a day trip to Gibraltar, the British Overseas Territory dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, or to Ronda, a mountaintop city dramatically set above the El Tajo gorge. The route continues to Valencia, with its picturesque cityscape and the Oceanogràfic, Europe's largest sea life centre, before finishing in Barcelona, the cosmopolitan capital of Catalonia, known for Gaudí's Sagrada Família and the medieval Gothic Quarter.
